Target Women

I have recently become somewhat obsessed with watching target women videos, not only is Sarah hilarious but she is also completely honest and gives women a way to fight back. While these videos are very female gendered, they give women a feeling of power because she shows you that you can be completely honest. One of my favourite videos is on beauty contraptions, I recommend you watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEAaHpFGKac . I love these videos because sarah says all of the things that most women want to say but don't know how.
One thing that i thought reallly makes these videos gendered is that only women really understand the issues she addresses. i was watching these videos with my boyfriend and I was laughing and pointing out all the things I loved about it but he had no clue what I was talkign about or why it was funny.

  1. I love this video, and am going to watch some more of her videos, I think they're fantastic.
Using dry wit, and just the right amount of sarcasm, the shows 'host' points out to viewers the ridiculousness of these beauty products. However, I question the effect of this type of programming.
Yes, it is positive in nature, pointing out the foolishness of the products being sold-- however, what is the breadth of its effect? What is the viewership of CurrentTV compared to the viewers that would be watching shows in which advertisements for these products are placed.
Personally, I feel that the discrepancy lays in that divide. What do you all think?
How much affect can these sorts of statements actually have against the advertisements targeting women?

  2. This video definitely reinforces the ideas that women are not simply cultural dupes! I sure as hell wont buy vibrating mascara, or a vibrating belt that will make me thin...

  3. Fantastic clip...I think I watched 20 more of her clips after the one you posted lol. It's interesting...I think that most to all women recognize the fact that many of the products aimed at us are ridiculous, and after watching her clip it's easy to say that we would never buy such silly products, but look in your bathroom or anywhere in your house...look at all the stuff we have been convinced to buy. Do you have a hot pink gendered razor (see other bloggers post on gendered razors) in your bathroom? Or a pile of make-up stashed away in a makeup bag? I think we are all duped (men and women alike) into buying thinks that we don't need.

Check this clip out...it's pretty interesting

  4. I think it also depends on socioeconomic status.
i grew up on the lower end of money, and although money changed with time (increased) i have few urges to buy anything that is 'pointless'.
I grew up understanding that if its not going to be used frequently than it is junk..
and now i can clearly appreciate that i didnt spend all my money on pointless things.
In comparison, my friends who grew up with endless supply of money have their rooms covered in 'crap' (pardon my french) and their opinion when we go shopping is "i dont know what ill use it for, but ill need it one day"... "but its cute, i want it!"

so i know that it is obviously case dependant but i do think that socioeconomic status has a large impact on buying 'stuff'

  5. I loved the video. The whole idea of contraptions are hilarious, I see these ads way too often with women who obviously have had cosmetic/plastic surgery. Honestly, I always watch the new mascara commercials that come out at least every six months. I stick to the same mascara, but i have a friend that buys EACH mascara that comes out, as if she believes that because Rihanna is currently endorsing it, it will make it any better especially when she already knows it's shit. You have to watch these infomercials and commercials with a level head, remember it is all bulls*it, honestly. How many of these females that do advertising for hair die and mascara actually use the product in "real life" or even on the set of that particularly commercial. All mascara has the same end result--clumpiness, keep that in mind ladies!!! I do not know if anyone else watches commercials like myself, but I take NOTHING at face value and refuse to believe their newest mascara is any better than the last. LOL
